What age should you have your child’s eye checked?

Newborn baby’s eyes should be examined and perform a red reflex test which can indicate that baby’s eyes are normal. An ophthalmologist should complete a comprehensive exam if the baby is premature, or at high risk for medical problems.

Infants should receive a second screening between 6 months and their first birthday.

Preschoolers between the ages of 3 and 3/12 years old. Vision and eye alignment should be assessed by an ophthalmologist.

School-age children entering school at age of 5-6 should receive a vision assessment before they enter the first grade. Nearsightedness (myopia) is the most common refractive eye problem and can be corrected with eye glasses. A comprehensive eye exam by an ophthalmologist will also check for misaligned eye (strabismus), lazy eye (amblyopia), refractive problems (myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia) or other eye related problems. According to the AOA school aged children should receive a vision exam every 2 years of age.
